Chief Executive Officer

ASTC, a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit educational corporation headquartered in Washington, DC, is seeking a CEO. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ASTC will be a strong leader who can articulate a clear vision for the overall direction, strategy and success of the organization. He or she will be an outstanding communicator at all levels (staff, Board, peers, general public), as well as a passionate spokesperson for ASTC and the importance of science education, informal learning environments, lifelong learning and intellectual inquiry. At this pivotal time in ASTC’s history, the new CEO will be a bold change agent with a track record for driving progress via collaboration, collegial management, and inspiring consensus and enthusiasm.

Responsibilities of the CEO cover the broad areas of: vision and leadership; external communications and partnerships; programs and membership, and fundraising. Responsibilities include:

• Advance ASTC’s new strategic direction, developing a realistic and forward-thinking plan for implementing that vision.
• Build consensus around programs and policies by ensuring the Board is well-informed and ASTC members feel included.
• Manage effectively and communicate clearly to ensure day-to-day operations of ASTC maintain highest levels of accountability, consistency, and integrity.
• Supervise, motivate, and inspire ASTC staff to excel.
• Serve as a public spokesperson and advocate for the importance of ASTC’s mission and goals both nationally and internationally.
• Position ASTC so it is considered the voice of science and technology centers as they advance informal science learning and education.
• Strengthen partnerships with regional science center networks in Europe, Asia-Pacific region, Africa, India, and North and South America.
• Deepen and extend ASTC’s vital working relationships with NSF, Noyce Foundation, UNESCO, and related organizations such as AAAS, ACM, AAM, and others.
• Initiate and develop opportunities to work with various leaders in the informal science education field, as well as with foundations, universities and research centers, and for-profit corporations.
• Gain trust and buy-in of ASTC member institutions by their recognition of ASTC’s continued relevance and goal to make all members successful.
• Oversee ASTC’s fundraising efforts, building long-term relationships with corporate sponsors, foundations, and other sources of revenue.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record of achievement in a complex, mission-driven organization. He/she will be an experienced manager with energy, integrity, and creativity plus analytical, organizational, and interpersonal abilities to earn respect and foster cooperation from ASTC members and partners. • National and international stature, sophisticated world view.
• Demonstrated passion for informal science education, intellectual inquiry, and lifelong learning.
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred.

The Science Museum of Virginia Foundation (SMVF), the fundraising arm of the Science Museum of Virginia, seeks a senior fundraising professional to lead, plan, manage and execute its fundraising programs, including annual fund, planned giving, and major gifts programs as well as capital and endowment campaigns. The position works with SMVF Board of Directors and staff and with the Director/CEO of the Science Museum of Virginia to ensure that the SMVF achieves fundraising goals to support the Museum.

Qualifications: 10+ years in a senior development position with a successful record of accomplishment and measurable achievement of fundraising goals, preferably in a cultural attraction or related institution; demonstrated leadership in crafting a development plan and implementing fundraising programs; a successful record of soliciting 6 and 7 figure gifts; multi-million dollar budget development, management and reporting experience; supervisory skills and ability to manage professional staff with varied skills and experience; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Explora is seeking an experienced and energetic Director of Development and External Relations who wants to help make a difference in science education for the 21st century.

• Responsible for development, marketing, public and media relations, publications, grant-writing, membership, and volunteers.

• Work with Executive Director to develop and implement innovative strategies for fundraising from individuals, corporations, and foundations to support the operation and vision at Explora, as well as possible future capital and endowment campaigns.

• Supervise development, marketing, membership, publications, and volunteer program staff.

Required qualifications:

The Senior Manager of Education and Experience provides visionary leadership in the development of programs and robust experiences in science, mathematics, engineering and technology which engage families, students, adults, teachers, and all other guests. He/she ensures that the Science Center experiences are responsive to all guests and that those with diverse needs can effectively participate in high quality programs. This Senior Manager integrates best practices in informal learning with a rich array of interactive science exhibits, IMAX films, collections, lab and workshop facilities and other materials. He/she has an external presence and successfully extends and sustains community partnerships to offer innovative collaborative programs.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• BS or BA degree in science, mathematics, education or related field. K-12 Education Certification, MAT or related advanced degree, preferred.
• Prefer 10 years progressive experience in informal science education program management or in K-12 teaching, school administration, teacher preparation, curriculum development, or in a similar related field. Supervisory experience is required.
• Minimum three years of teaching experience in the informal sector or at the K-12 level.
• Position requires a flexible weekend and evening work schedule.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History, located in Martinsville, Virginia, is seeking a new Executive Director. The museum is an agency of the Secretary of Natural Resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is the official state museum and repository for collections pertaining to the natural history of Virginia. The museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Founded in 1984 as a private museum, it became a state agency in 1988, and earned AAM accreditation in 1993. The museum has strong programs in research and collections, and both in-house and outreach education. The museum employs 39 full-time staff and 26 part-time staff, with a fiscal year 2008 budget of $4,245,606. The museum opened a newly constructed, 89,127 square-foot facility in March 2007. Candidates must have excellent leadership, communication, and management skills, and must be knowledgeable in all facets of the museum. This position includes significant fundraising responsibilities. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
